Tradesmen located in the Plymouth area will be interested to learn that trade tool supplier Screwfix has announced that it is to open two new stores in the region.

As part of the retailer's expansion programme, a new store has opened in the city's Exeter Street – with the first customers welcomed in at the end of last month. Screwfix is also planning another branch in Saltash, which is tipped to open within the next few months.

The two new stores will complement the existing branch in Valley Road, Plympton and form part of the 60 new premises that Screwfix has confirmed it is to add to the 303 stores it already has across the country.

Alongside its expansion in the UK, the retailer has also said that, due to rising profits, it is to open four new stores in Germany in order to capitalise on the success of its European shipping service, which was launched in 2013.

Screwfix has said that 91 per cent of the UK population now have access to a store within a 30-minute drive. Each of the stores stock 11,000 products, ranging from screws and nails to electrical items, power tools and paint.

Andrew Livingston, chief executive of Screwfix, told the Plymouth Herald that the retailer was “continuing to invest in stores” as well as its online offerings, rather than taking everything online as some other retailers are doing.

Mr Livingston said that tradesmen needed to “never be far from a Screwfix store” whether they were working on-site at a project, or travelling between jobs.
