May came to an end last week and it meant time for our monthly prize draw to pick our ‘Student of the Month’. This month’s lucky winner was decorating student, Otis Hull and he will now have the option to use his voucher for a course or a set of tools.
Each month we are now drawing out a name from the hat of students that have trained with us in that month. This is to give something back to our students and to give them a great start with their new skills and even their new career. Otis was extremely happy to be chosen as student of the month.
Otis completed five weeks of training with us here at Able Skills as he completed the City & Guilds Painting & Decorating Course. His tutors Mark and Chris described him as a ‘Great student and a really nice guy’.
Here is what Otis had to say about his time training with us:
“I decided to join the 5 week Painting and Decorating course with Able Skills because I didn’t have any practical skills that I could use that would benefit my future. Painting and decorating appealed to me because it was something where I could step back at the end of a job and have some real satisfaction from what had been done. Being able to add the final touches to someone’s home and knowing I’ve been taught the skills to do that properly is a great feeling.
Before I started my course, I was working in retail, being messed about by managers and getting underpaid. With this course, I can now earn a proper wage, work for myself and feel accomplished when I get a job done.
My plans for the future are to spend a while honing my skills, doing a variety of jobs and growing a contact list of other people in similar fields of work. When I feel I’ve advanced my profession even more, I would like to start employing people to work with me and eventually have a well-established painting and decorating business.
Able Skills gave me the knowledge and confidence to start towards establishing myself and I would recommend them to anyone who is considering learning a trade.”
