In this latest instalment of our Student Stories series, we caught up with Able Skills student Alex, who is currently doing a multi-skills course with us.
In this quick Q&A, you’ll find out why he is doing the course, what made him choose us over other construction training providers and what he plans to do once he’s finished.
Plus, he provides some useful feedback about his experience of the course content, the teaching style and being part of a student group for the duration of the course.
What course are you doing?
“I’m currently undertaking the City & Guilds Handyman course which contains plastering, plumbing, painting & decorating, bricklaying and carpentry.”
Why are you taking this course?
“I’m doing the course to try and get a full all-rounded sort of view of what trades I might want to do in the future, and some hands-on skills.”
Was this a change in career for you?
“It most certainly was! It’s allowed me to choose which [trade] I want to do. I’ve now set my heart on carpentry.”
What will you do after the course?
“So after the course, I will return to work and soon I will then attend the carpentry course and do an NVQ Level 2 in carpentry.”
What have you enjoyed most about the multi-skills course at Able Skills?
“The amount of information that you learn is astronomical. You learn so much! So much hands-on skills that are unforgettable.”
Alex went on to explain how the skills he’d learnt were incredibly useful, and he could see how handy they’d be for “any little projects” or give you a great idea for what you want to go on to do after the course.
This particular course, as it covers a range of trade subjects, is an opportunity to get a feel for a few options before committing to a longer course in one subject, if a more advanced qualification is your aim.
How did you find the course in terms of the teaching staff and students?
“The teaching staff were absolutely brilliant. And all the students that are with you are like-minded; they’re here to learn as well. Very professional.”
How did you find out about Able Skills?
“So, I found you guys online. A quick look at all the reviews and thought it was fantastic and then came to have a look around.”
Whether it’s confidently tackling a project at home or planning for a new career, our Student Stories showcase some of the many reasons people choose to learn new skills in construction.
