Towards the beginning of last year, a large number of people in the UK were placed on Furlough. This obviously being caused by the Pandemic. Some elected to use this free time to focus on getting fit others chose to learn new skills. Emma is a prime example of this! Emma was an Air Hostess at British Airways before the Pandemic put a holt to almost all travel.
What Course Are You Doing And Why Able Skills?
Emma is currently on week three of her four-week City & Guilds Level 2 Plastering Course. She chose to come and complete her training with us at Able Skills because she had seen the videos that we post on our social media platforms and liked how she was able to get a sense of what our students get up to while they are here. In addition to this, she mentioned that the team on the phone were amazing when it came to helping her understand the courses we offer and which ones may be best suited for her given her goals as well as the entire booking process!
Why Did You Want To Do This Course?
As previously mentioned Emma was an Air Hostess with British Airways. And due to the lack of demand for travel caused by the Pandemic found herself placed onto Furlough. Where she still finds herself today! Emma says she wanted to take the opportunity to learn new skills and set her heart on Plastering. This is because both her Grandfather and Father were both Plasterers in their day and she wanted to carry on the family tradition!
What Is Your End Goal With This Training?
Upon completion of her training here at Able Skills, Emma says she plans to go and work with a charity that helps abused women find new housing. Seeing as this is charity work she will take the opportunity to continue to learn the industry as well as improving her skills with the Plaster! One day further down the line she hopes to start her own business. She knows that there is a large demand for female Plasterers and plans to attack the gap in the market head-on!
What Advice Would You Give To Someone In A Similar Situation To Yourself?
Give it a go! It may be scary at the start to try and enter a male-dominated trade like Plastering. But the industry requires more female tradespeople. Currently, female tradespeople account for just 4.4% of the UK’s trade workforce. Emma also goes on to say that if you are suffering from a lack of confidence because of your limited experience with a trade like Plastering, do not worry it will come. It is the same as anything in life the more you do it the better you will become. There is no better place for you to come and make mistakes that you can learn from than here at Able Skills.
How Have You Found The Facilities & Instructors?
Able Skills is proud to supply all of our students with the tools they need to complete any course! Our Plastering department is second to none. Jo, one of our Plastering team has helped Emma a lot through her journey here at Able Skills. She said that all of our Plastering team has been amazing. However, she wanted to give a special shout-out to Jo. As he took her under his wing from early on and gave her the confidence to dream of a career in the industry. Emma has loved the fact that her gender has never hindered her relationship with our instructors. “I will definitely be keeping in contact with them”
