Today, Theresa May made a conference speech in Birmingham and addressed some keys issues, which included the current housing crisis that is affecting many across the UK. Over the last few years, the government have made plans to build homes across the UK, however, due to a number of different reasons targets have not been met.
Theresa May now plans to lift the cap on councils’ funding for new housing developments to help solve the current housing crisis in all corners of England, Wales and Scotland. Her plan is to get the homes built that the country needs. Here is part of her speech earlier on today:
“Solving the housing crisis is the biggest domestic policy challenge of our generation. It doesn’t make sense to stop councils from playing their part in solving it.
So, today, I can announce that we are scrapping that cap. We will help you get on the housing ladder – and we will build the homes this country needs.”
It has been well documented in the news about the housing crisis affecting so many across the UK and how many young people are now struggling to get onto the housing ladder, with the lack of homes and affordable homes. This new cap will potentially allow an extra £1bn borrowing, leading to tens of thousands more homes being built.
This will benefit the construction industry massively as more work will become available. The skills shortage has been one of the many reasons that has affected house building over recent years, however, with an increase of work it means the job opportunities will rise and more skilled and qualified workers can get work.
Now is a fantastic time to get involved in the construction industry with the work that is being planned by the government. Work will be available in all corners of the country and workers will be needed in all trades. So, it is looking like the perfect time to get started in a new career within construction.
To get work on these new house building developments, you’ll need to choose a trade, gain an NVQ, then apply for a CSCS Card. You will not gain access to work on a building site without a CSCS Card.
Before getting a CSCS Card, you will need to achieve an NVQ in your chosen trade. Here at Able Skills in Dartford, we offer NVQ training courses in every trade. With house building going on across Dartford, it is the perfect stepping stone to getting work in the construction industry.
