The Ministry of Defence’s Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme is a fantastic way of opening up new opportunities for those who have completed, or are nearing the end of their military service.
Designed to promote lifelong learning by offering financial support for up to three years’ worth of training, the scheme can be used to obtain a nationally recognised qualification of level 3 or above with an approved provider.
At Able Skills, we’re proud to have been recognised as an ELCAS-approved training centre, offering several courses that can be completed using funding from the scheme.
One such course is the Level 3 Certificate in Building, Installation and Property Maintenance Skills. Below, we’ll go into a little more detail about what is covered in the course, and why it can be a great first step in building a new career.
What does the course cover?
The course is designed to equip you with all the skills and knowledge required to complete the core elements of building, installation, and property maintenance work.
Over six weeks, you’ll choose to focus on three trades from the following:
- Plumbing
- Plastering
- Tiling
- Carpentry
- Brickwork.
Your learning will then be split into two-week intervals. You will cover both the theory and practical elements of each trade, providing you with the confidence and skills required to comfortably carry out work in each area.
Throughout the course, you will also complete regular theory and practical assessments to validate the progress you have made, and upon completion, you’ll possess a nationally-recognised Level 3 AIM qualification.
Who would the course appeal to?
If you have finished, or are nearing the end of your military service, are eligible for ELCAS funding and are interested in pursuing a career in the trades, then the Level 3 Certificate in Building, Installation and Property Maintenance Skills is a great way to build a well-rounded knowledge across multiple skill sets.
One of the more obvious reasons for completing this course is to build a career in property maintenance, whether that be working for a business, council or at some point down the line, working for yourself.
The course can also be useful if you intend to move into property development, allowing you to complete many of the typical tasks associated with home renovations without the reliance on qualified tradespeople.
There is also every chance that you discover you have a particular passion or knack for one of the areas covered in the course, and may choose to go on and complete further, more advanced training to specialise in a specific area. For example, you may find you really enjoy the plumbing aspect of the learning, so you decide to pursue an NVQ and focus your career towards this field.
The cost of Able Skills’ Level 3 Certificate in Building, Installation and Property Maintenance Skills can be funded under the ELCAS scheme.
