Technicians who have taken plumbing courses could find they have more employment opportunities as a result of the re-launch of the Warm Front initiative.
The government programme delivers assistance to people who are struggling to keep their homes temperate.
Grants are available for improvements to heating systems, which could involve engineers with plumbing course training being brought in to install such equipment.
Following the re-opening of the Warm Front project, energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne said: "We have improved the Warm Front scheme so it's better targeted at those who need it most, helping around 90,000 households over the next two years."
He went on to stress that the launch of the Green Deal in 2012 should also have a huge impact on energy efficiency in the home.
The Warm Front scheme also offers people help in fitting draughtproofing measures, loft insulation and hot water tank insulation among other procedures.
