Justice for Tenants!
Gas Safe Engineers! This weeks brings bad news and justice for a Gas Safe Engineer who falsified gas safety certificates across properties for a Landlord based in Chigwell.
'Residential Landlord' reported it was property owner Mr Tariq Hussain who asked Gas Safety Engineer Muhammad Waseem to falsify the paperwork for four flats located in Chingford.
Such fraud lead to serious risk of danger
In order to obtain property licensing, Landlords must provide relevant proof that their properties are deemed safe enough to live in and Gas Safe certificates fall in that very same category. Despite what was submitted, the tenants live's were put in huge danger as the boilers had not actually been adequately serviced.
Now being a Gas Safe Engineer means that you DO have the capability of repairing boilers through courses like Boiler Fault Finding as well as experience in the real world.
What could this mean for others that are doing it?
The fact that Mr Hussain and Mr Waseem still went on ahead to falsify the certificates most certainly makes the penalty of hundreds of pounds worth of fines per victim a very fair punishment.
In addition to the fines, Mr Waseem has also been removed from the Gas Safe Engineer's Register. Yes, after all that training and time spent working on his portfolio, he has thrown his career down the drain.
There is still plenty of work out there for Gas Safe Engineers to make a living the right way. Cabinet member for housing, Louise Mitchell commented on the crime saying,
''This is a great result for tenants in Waltham Forest. This needless fraud could have cost Mr Hussain’s tenants far more than the price of a safety certificate – it could have cost them their lives. If you are a landlord we expect you to meet basic obligations to ensure your tenants’ safety, and if you are not prepared to meet them we will find out and we will press for the maximum penalty available under the law. This prosecution shows that we are serious about ensuring the safety of private rental tenants in Waltham Forest. The message is clear: do not be tempted to cut corners when lives are at stake.''
