Here at our training centre we have been teaching and providing industry-recognised Electrical qualifications for almost 20-years! Recently we have made the bold decision to do away with our Part-P training courses also known as our Domestic Installers course. This is a big decision for us but it is the right one. Over the last year we have decided to concentrate our efforts on helping aspiring tradesmen and women who are looking to become fully-qualified electricians. We're an Electrical Training Centre of Excellence and we pride ourselves on delivering only the best Electrician courses for or students. Frankly, there are too many complications with the domestic installer route and subsequently scheme providers. Today we want to look into why we won't be offering this option moving forward and the courses that we do offer that can take you from no experience to becoming a qualified electrician working out in the industry and how to get there...

Why are we not offering Part-p?
At Able Skills the very first electrical courses that we ever offered were through EAL, the certification body and they were focused on helping individuals gain the theory and practical knowledge to undertake domestic electrical work and self-certificate the work undertaken. This was back in 2005 and the course was fantastic, however, like every industry there are many changes and developments over the years and although the course initially was very comprehensive and diligent in it's execution - The qualification ceased and training centres like us were left to devise their own courses and assessment processes. After the termination of that EAL qualification we continued for many years to offer Domestic Installer courses of our own with great success.
So, what's the issue?
The issue lies at the point when individuals have completed their training with us and look to register with a Competent Persons Scheme - The process and requirements for registering with bodies such as NICEIC, Napit and Stroma etc is increasingly becoming a very grey area, making it confusing for those aspiring domestic installers and understandably, for safety reasons it is becoming much harder. Additionally, there is no clear message from the electrical industry that taking on 'short courses' for the purpose of working in a domestic dwelling are sufficient to move installers forward towards scheme registration, often providers will require you to have 2-years of electrical installation experience.
What are we doing instead?
So, in a way it seems that Domestic Installer courses or Part-P courses are eventually going to be a thing of the past whether you are looking to work in a domestic setting or not and may possibly require a higher level of qualification. To avoid confusion and for the benefit of our students we are simply getting ahead of the issue and focusing our efforts solely on higher levels of qualification and generally those looking to become fully-qualified electricians. In fact, there is NO requirement at all to undertake Domestic electrical training in order to move on to full electrical training and qualifications.
Instead, we will be concentrating on being a training centre of a high standard that provides the right training for ANY electrician. There are many different roles and positions within the electrical industry, to help you get there we offer comprehensive qualifications that are at the core of any professional electricians training, these are City & Guilds Level 2, City & Guilds Level 3, 18th Edition, Inspection and Testing, NVQ and AM2. We also offer some more advanced courses for electrician to further their ability and knowledge. However, these are the fundamental qualifications and all of which are found in our JIB Gold card package! - This is the all-in-one package of training for somebody looking to become fully-qualified from scratch, start to finish.

Can I get started during lockdown?
Unfortunately we are unable to conduct training courses here at our centre at the moment due to the national lockdown, we hope to return as soon as it is safe to do so. We are offering remote training options for those looking to kick-start a fresh career during this downtime - Our Home-Study courses work by you learning the theory side of the qualification at home before attending our centre to learn the practical side and complete the relevant assessments. We will send you our specially crafted 'Home-Study Pack' that includes all of the theory information as well as example questions for you to test yourself with. We also send you City & Guilds test books that support the information within the pack. Additionally, we will provide you with access to the online learning platform Smartscreen as an alternative source of information and finally we will supply you with contact details for one of our instructors in case you require some additional guidance as you study.
