What do I need before applying to the Gas Safe Register?

We have been back now at Able skills providing Gas courses since the beginning of August. One of our most popular trades is the trade of Gas and we enjoy giving students a space to learn and develop. Becoming a Gas Engineer is not easy, however, we do our best to make sure the entire process is as straightforward as possible. We take Gas safety seriously and try to instil into our students the importance of Gas safety. Today, we are going to look at what qualifications you will need as a new, developing engineer before applying to the Gas Safe Register...

What is the Gas Safe Register?

So, what is the Gas Safe Register? Well, the Gas Safe Register is the only official gas registration body of gas businesses and individuals in the United Kingdom. They are responsible for ensuring Gas Safety in an aim to protect the public and the Gas Engineers themselves. They do this firstly by maintaining a list of those deemed responsible to carry out Gas related work, to ensure only those who are qualified engineers, licensed to legally work on gas. They also investigate reports of illegal gas work and generally work in an effort to reduce illegal and irresponsible use of Gas.

What do I need?

Obviously you will need to learn the trade first. Gaining an understanding of both the theoretical aspects and the practical side of the trade. As a new entrant, our Gas courses like our New Entrant Gas Training Package 2 aim to give you the 3-stages needed in preparation for Gas Safe Registration. The first stage is learning...Our courses include 7-weeks of both theory and workshop based, hands-on learning - Accompanied by our expert instructors you will work through a range of topics gaining a solid understanding of the fundamentals...

Next, on one of our courses, we would have you complete a portfolio in an effort to gather evidence that you can now carry out gas work to a good level, to do this you will need to work alongside an already registered engineer, this will help you to learn and gain experience whilst also gathering evidence. Finally, the last stage is an ACS (Approved Certification Scheme) assessment this is where you will earn the qualifications needed in preparation for registration. The preliminary exam would be CCN1 this will take around 5-days and will cover:

  • Gas Safety Regulations, British Standards and Manufacturers' Instructions
  • Emergency Procedures, Labels and Warning Notices
  • Unsafe Situations, and Related Documentation
  • Combustion, Gas Rates, Burner/Installation Pressures
  • Testing for Tightness, Purging and Relighting Appliances
  • Pipework and Fittings
  • Operation of Appliance Gas Safety Devices and Controls
  • Ventilation
  • Flueing Standards, Installation and Testing.

Now, beyond this initial Core Safety exam (CCN1) there are many individual appliances that have their own qualification, this will matter when it comes to Gas Safe Registration as on the back of your Gas Safe ID card, as you can see in the example below, there will be a list of appliances you can legally work with -  Meaning you will need to complete these during your ACS assessments if you wish to work on these appliances out on the job, these include: CENWAT1: Central Heating Boilers & Water Heaters, MET1: Meters, CKR1: Domestic Cookers, HTR1: Gas Fires & Wall Heaters and CPA1: Combustion Performance Analysis.
