For most people, a Gas Engineer is somebody you call when you are thinking about getting a new boiler installed in your home or the person you call when you panic as your heating isn't working and you are left in the cold. But most do not consider the vast array of commercial, retail, industrial and more implications of gas...When looking to become an Engineer you should know that this is a role where you will not easy become bored, falling into a routine is not an option when every day is different from the next. It’s also a role that’s suited for people who enjoy working with other people and helping them. You’ll spend a lot of time in other people’s homes and workplaces, typically installing, servicing, and repairing various gas appliances and central heating systems. So, if you are somebody that doesn't enjoy being sociable and talking to clients then this trade may not be for you! There is no one ‘typical day’ as a gas engineer, which makes this a good career choice for people who don’t want to be trapped in a mundane routine.

How much do they make?

The work that you carry out on a daily basis will largely be down to the type of training that you have had in the past and the extent of your knowledge, the more experience the higher your earnings. However, let's look at some statistics that show the overall average that people working this trade are making: The combination of a nationwide gas engineer shortage and the highly-trained nature of this job means that newly qualified engineers can expect an average starting salary of £32,000 – that’s £6,000 higher than the national average! As your career progresses, like we said, you can expect to make even more money. An experienced gas engineer makes around £37,500 a year. Self-employed engineer's earnings will highly be dependent on the hours you work and so on, but you could earn up to £60,000 by creating loyal customers and having good relationships with clients. This also depends on where in the country you are working, obviously London and the surrounding areas are probably your best bet!
