Here at Able Skills we have been teaching Electrician courses for 20-years! Over that time we have seen huge changes in the industry, the way people use technology and the knowledge that electricians need. Next year, in 2022 the second amendment of the 18th Edition wiring regulations will come into place. Today, we will look at what this means and the impact on the industry.

18th Edition courses

What is the 18th Edition?

The 18th Edition or BS 7671 is the industry standards and requirements for electrical installations. Put simply they are a set of guidelines for electricians and make up the standard for safety practices and is considered to be one of the most important documents for electricians in the UK.

Created by the IET or The Institution of Engineering and Technology, these regulations should be understood by all working electricians. Electricians are not required to know every single piece of information within the document. However, professionals should have a good working knowledge and understand the applications within real word scenarios.

Do we teach the 18th Edition?

Yes, we do. We have been teaching every version of the regulations and the 18th Edition specifically since it came out in July of 2018. We offer a 3-day course that helps students gain familiarity with the layout, content and application of BS 7671:2018 - 18th Edition Regulations.

The 18th Edition Courses that we offer is completely classroom-based. The course costs £395 including vat. A £150 deposit will secure a booking and the balance can be paid on the course start date. We will ensure that you are fully prepared for the City & Guilds 18th Edition test which is a 2-hour multiple-choice, on-line examination.

The exam is 'open book', meaning that you will be able to look up wiring 'regs' and refer to the 18th edition book during the exam process. We currently have plenty of space on the course, so any electricians in training or professions looking to gain an understanding of the regulations can give us a call on 01322 280 202. What changes are coming in 2022?

Most of the changes coming revolve around new types of technology such as solar panels and energy efficient installations. Given the way our industry operates, the roles electrical engineers serve, and the increasing speed of technological change, the Regulations must reflect these changes to ensure installations are safe, efficient, useful, and able to meet evolving standards.

Changes are still unclear and some are minor changes with others being significant, such as a new Part 8 for Chapter 82 Prosumers Low Voltage electrical installations. Removal of the risk assessment method for omitting additional RCD protection on socket outlets, new foundation earthing requirements and so on.

Of course, our training here at Able Skills will adapt to the changes and we will aim to provide an updated version of our course that supports the new changes within amendment 2 of the wiring regulations. Our course will keep you up-to-date and give you confidence knowing that you understand what is required of you out in the industry.
