Here at Able Skills we are returning to in-centre training including our comprehensive Gas Engineer training courses from March 8th. Gas engineers in the UK keep British homes and businesses running by installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing gas appliances such as gas cookers and heating systems and their work has not been affected by lockdown as they continue to work and make a great living. Let's take a look at some news surrounding the trade and how you can get started training with us...

Are the repercussions for illegal Gas work strong enough?

There has been some new recently surrounding whether or not the punishments for illegal gas work go far enough? The conversation was stirred online when an unregistered self-employed kitchen fitter has been given an eight month suspended prison sentence after carrying out illegal gas work. The 'Engineer' in question carried out gas work at two properties in Exeter by himself, falsely using another person’s name and registration number. Most don't ever seen jail time and often get away with a fine, however, the fact is these fines handed out are a mere fraction of what they would have earned while working illegally.

So, the point is sentences are way too lenient, these people are putting the public in danger, gas is no joke which is why the Gas Safe Register exists in the first place. According to one Gas Engineer "What would be nice is for the judicial system to have minimum sentences for illegal gas work." If you are in training to become an engineer or you are considering a career in the industry make sure that you register with Gas Safe, you can apply for registration easily online or alternatively you can download a registration form. The cost of a new application is £347.

Gas Safe Register inspections?

During the lockdowns in place across the UK, adjustments have been made to Gas Safe Register’s inspection process so that they can continue while minimising face-to-face contact. Gas Safe Register will carry out remote technical assessments with engineers by phone, and may use Microsoft Teams to undertake managing gas safety assessments with larger registered businesses. The outcome of these inspection types will determine whether and when a face-to-face inspection is needed. - Gas Safe Register
