Train to start a new career in plumbing
If you’re seriously considering a new career in plumbing, you’ll also be seriously considering how you get started. You’ll have all kinds of questions that you’ll want to know the answers to:
- Where can I get training in plumbing?
- How do I know what qualifications in plumbing I need?
- Does that change if I want to work in people’s homes, on-site or commercial?
No matter where you see your plumbing career taking you, some practical training will give you a solid foundation of skills, knowledge, and experience. Learning plumbing on a construction training course is an extremely efficient way of gaining technical knowledge and skills and gaining confidence while working towards a plumbing qualification.
Once you’ve found a training provider, which plumbing course do you choose?

Plumbing courses at Able Skills
Introduction to Plumbing: This is our DIY plumbing course, where you can learn some basic domestic plumbing skills. As a City & Guilds-approved centre, even this short plumbing course is approved by City & Guilds, which means it can transfer to the professional course if you decide to work towards the qualification.
City & Guilds Level 2 Plumbing: This is a great course to start with if you want to become a qualified plumber as it will give you an industry-recognised level 2 qualification. The course covers the theory and practical elements of domestic plumbing.
City & Guilds Full Plumbing Package: This package of learning combines the City & Guilds Level 2 course with NVQ and WRAS. It will take you from learning the basics through to being prepared for site work and joining an approved contractors’ scheme such as WIAPS.
City & Guilds Level 2 Plumbing Course for Experienced Plumbers: If you already have three years of experience as a plumber, but don’t have a qualification, this is a fast-track option to achieving your level 2 in plumbing.
City & Guilds Level 2 Plumbing NVQ for Experienced Plumbers: Similar to the fast-track course above, this one recognises your existing experience in the industry and streamlines the process to achieve your level 2 plumbing and NVQ – so you can be ready for site work.
Homes Study Level 2 Plumbing Course: This is the same training and qualification that you’d get from the City & Guilds Level 2 Plumbing Course but with the benefit of being able to fit in the theory at your leisure. Using our plumbing manual, the theory section of the course is self-led, and then you come into Able Skills for assessments and practical training.
NVQ Level 2 Plumbing Assessments: This profiling session and site visits are available if you’re already working as a plumber, you already hold the level 2 qualification, and you now need to achieve an NVQ.
