How does the skills gap affect the Gas industry?
Here at Able Skills, we provide hands-on Gas courses to many students from all walks of life, young and old. However, the industry is still struggling in terms of the volume of qualified Gas Engineers... 41% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s) are struggling to recruit plumbers and gas installers. It is fundamental we reach out to young people using the best methods possible, it is evident that young people are not interested in learning practical skills, and trades like gas work are experiencing the consequences.
The fact that there is more demand than there are workers means that there is a huge opportunity for new entrants into the industry. New entrants are welcomed with higher annual pay than ever seen within the trade, simply due to the lack of numbers. Taking on gas and becoming a Gas Safe Registered Engineer is not just a job it is a career and even an opportunity to become self-employed!
The job pays a decent salary, some young people may think that there isn't a lot of money to be made in trades, they would be very wrong. Obviously this will depend on your location and reputation but on average Gas Engineers are earning around £36,000 per year - with experience under your belt could see you earning somewhere in the region of £50,000. Plus with the very real opportunity of becoming self-employed...Generating some advertising and hard work means the sky is the limit!
