Theo is one of the latest students to undergo the New Entrant Gas Training (Package 3), one of the several Gas Training Courses we hold here at Able Skills. Held over a period of 7 weeks, those that are new to the industry will learn what is required of them before going out on site and becoming Gas Safe Registered. Today we'll discuss why Theo turned to Gas Training Courses in the first place and how he's finding the course so far.

So Theo, what made you want to be a Gas Engineer?

Well right now I work in security and that isn't something I want to do forever. It's long hours and very demanding meaning time away from my family. I've just had a child you see so I would love something that offers more sociable hours, or at least more 'normal' hours. A job that allows me to come home at a reasonable time, say late afternoon would be a gods send.

I turned to Gas because I know a couple of guys who I worked with before in security who trained at Able Skills and are now earning alot more money than what we did working as a security guard. When I was younger, I always knew I would be in a role that involved me being on my feet and even though security offered me enough stability at the time, my circumstance have now changed and it's time to re-train and gain a job that gives me a better work/ life balance. I also want to do my own private jobs in the future for extra money, that will help out alot.

What can you tell us about the course so far?

I'm on my third week here on the course and I've learnt alot so far. This week we'll be looking at Gas Regulations and Tightness Testing which is fundamental to what being a Gas Engineer entails. My instructor seems very knowledgeable and the equipment really is impressive. We all have our own bays to work with and it's a very positive environment full of people willing to help. I honestly can't fault it.

What are your plans after?

Further down the line, I can see myself running my own business as a self employed Gas Engineer.
