The role of a Gas Engineer is vital and a fantastic trade to know. Today, we want to look at how you can become a Gas Safe Registered professional through our training and what makes this such a great career choice!
Why a Gas Engineer?
Firstly, it's an in-demand business. You may be thinking about a career change due to the unpredictability of your employment because of lockdown, maybe you work in the retail industry for example. Gas Engineers are constantly sought after! A career as a gas heating engineer gives you real job security, because there’s a strong and consistent demand for these skills. Whether that is in a domestic setting or working on big commercial projects.
Secondly, Gas Engineers earn a great living. The job is not only rewarding but offers a fantastic salary with the average currently around £37,500. With more experience in the trade comes more potential for earnings of up to £50,000. Not to mention this trade is often worked on a self-employed basis. Creating your own business, If you’re ambitious and keen to keep on developing your skills, the sky’s the limit. Some independent Gas Engineers will charge upwards of £550 day rate!
Finally, the role is interesting and rewarding. If you’re the sort of person who enjoys trying their hand at different things and not being stuck in one place, this career definitely fits the bill. As a Gas Engineer you will be able to see the results of your hard work at the end of the day, the job is hands-on giving you a real sense of value. Each day in the role will being about new challenges to take on, new things to learn and lots of variety in your work.
How can I start learning the trade?
Here at Able Skills training centre we have courses designed to help people with no experience kick-start a career in the trade. As you can see in the video above our courses are hands on, taking on a training option such as our New Entrant Gas Training Package 2 you will learn a whole range of new skills, gain theory knowledge and confidence in your ability.
The course will start with an initial 7-weeks of intense training. During this time you will learn the skills that are required for you to eventually be in a position to register with Gas Safe. One of our talented instructors will guide you through a variety of topics such as; Gas emergency actions and procedures, Installation of pipework and fittings, Soldering, Tightness Testing, How to test appliances and so much more!
Throughout this initial 7-week period there will be written exams and practical assessments, then upon successful completion of this training part, you will be provided with a Bpec Foundation Portfolio and guidance for completion. You will need a portfolio of evidence on the job in order to move forward from here.
You can do this independently if you know a Gas Safe Registered Engineer willing to take you on . Remember you cannot complete this in a simulated environment, all work collected must be from on-site work, whether that's in a domestic property or elsewhere.
The final part included in our New Entrant Gas Training Package 2 is an ACS Assessment! This will need to be completed before you are eligible for Gas Safe registration and this is a requirement for all operatives involved in the installation, maintenance and servicing of domestic gas appliances and pipe-work installations. Everyone will take on the CCN1 Module over 5-days which covers general Gas Safety then there are additional tests you can take listed below, the ones you take will depend on the evidence collected in your portfolio!

When can I get started?
Currently, we have spaces available on our New Entrant Gas Training Package 2 in August starting on the 2nd You can secure your place on this course by giving us a call on 01322 280 202 or by booking online. To book a course online follow the link and look for the button 'Reserve your Space' from here you'll be able to fill in your details and pay your deposit. A £500 deposit is needed to secure your place, you'll pay the rest as you train.
