Homeowners have been encouraged to make their homes more energy efficient, which could provide work for tradespersons who have taken plumbing training courses.

According to uSwitch, consumers could soon be forced to pay a further £548 on their fuel bills each year as a result of new investment recently announced by the Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem).

The £319 million of funding is set to go towards renewable electricity production, but is part of "much broader" £233.5 billion investment programme that will add hundreds on to energy bills.

Will Marples, energy expert at uSwitch, commented that "consumers have to start taking action now to future-proof themselves against far higher energy bills."

He suggested that purchasing a new boiler could be a good idea as it would reduce the amount of energy that homeowners use up.

If Britons take his advice, it could be that workers who have taken plumbing training courses are in demand to install such eco-friendly appliances.
