Industry experts who have approved plumbing qualifications and have taken relevant training courses are integral to the new boiler scrappage scheme, according to the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE).
Alistair Darling, chancellor of the exchequer, announced on Wednesday in his pre-Budget report plans for the programme, which would see British homeowners given grants by the government to go towards the cost of replacing their old boilers with new energy-efficient ones.
However, chief executive of CIPHE Blane Judd commented that more needs to be done to instruct householders how to properly fit the appliances and make the most out of the scheme.
"Without issuing advice on the correct sizing of the boiler, installation of proper controls and the importance of regular maintenance to help reduce energy consumption, little will be achieved by simply replacing old boilers," he said.
He added that it is important industry professionals who are properly registered are therefore integral to the programme and its success.
