More young people should be advised to sign up for plumbing courses rather than pursue academic subjects, according to one source.
Writing for the Mirror, Fiona McIntosh suggested that the world is "crying out" for more plumbers and the profession can offer youngsters direction in their lives.
In her opinion, it would be better to have more young people taking plumbing courses than for the number of arts or history graduates to increase.
She remarked: "Instead of wrestling with medieval history, they could be learning a skill they'll use for the rest of their lives. What makes more sense than that?"
Ms McIntosh suggested that this makes technology colleges a good idea for the future, since it will allow young people access to plumber training courses earlier on in their careers.
Last week, the same publication reported that BT chairman Sir Michael Rake criticised education standards in the UK, claiming many children are completely illiterate.
