New research by Saga has suggested people under 35 are more likely to call in a tradesman with plumbing course qualifications than the over-50s.
The study found 12 per cent of the older generation intend to try to fix leaking or cracked pipes themselves this winter, while just four per cent of younger adults will do the same.
Dr Ros Altmann, director general of Saga Group, noted the under-35s may be opting to hire professionals who have taken plumbing courses due to time constraints, or simply because they lack the skills to take on such DIY tasks.
"The older generations are far more willing to get hands on when it comes to preparing their home for winter," she pointed out.
However, Dr Altmann stressed that it is sensible for all homeowners to check their house is in good working order for the winter months.
The UK is currently in the grip of a cold snap, with weather forecasters expecting snow showers to continue in some parts of the country until the weekend, when temperatures are predicted to rise.
