This particular 3 week training programme will provide you with skills across plastering, dry lining/taping & jointing and rendering.
The course will cover:
Week 1- Plastering
This 5 day plastering course has been recognised by City & Guilds as a comprehensive introduction to plastering so upon successful completion of this course you will receive an Able Skills certificate assured by City & Guilds to confirm the skills that you will have learned.
During this 5 day plastering course you will learn:
Health & Safety and PPE
To cut and fix plaster board to walls and ceilings
To tape standard and internal joints
To cut and fix angle beads around windows and reveals
To prepare surfaces before plastering using bonding plaster and finishing plaster, ensuring a flat finished surface ready for decorating
To mix plastering materials
To skim walls
To skim ceilings
To apply PVA adhesive Unibond to existing surfaces.
Week 2 – Dry Lining/Taping & Jointing
Dry lining/ Taping & Jointing is the use of plasterboard on timber or metal frames and due to the pre-finished nature of most board systems, dry lining/taping & jointing is uncomplicated to learn.
In an area dedicated to Dry Lining, you will be taught the following:
Health and safety, protective equipment, tools of the trade, safe and correct use of tools
To measure and cut plasterboard to size
Apply plasterboard to stud walls, window and door returns and internal and external angles
'dot and dab' method: direct bonding of plasterboard to brickwork and block work
Tape internal, external and flush joints
Apply beads to external angles
Joint filler and joint cement
Hand jointing techniques to all joints leaving a smooth finish
Sanding down and sealing for decoration
On completion of this course, you will have gained the confidence and technique required to undertake Dry lining jobs and achieve an acceptable finish.
Week 3 – Rendering
This course is designed to give you a good understanding of the basics of rendering. Whether you are a total beginner or someone who has some knowledge of rendering, this course will teach you the various steps required to complete any rendering projects that you may come across.
This course will cover all new and old methods of preparation including:
Fixing of rules around windows to form a hard angle
Learning to fit angle beads around windows and reveals
How to fix a batten above DPC height to form a Bell cast bead
Applying a scratch coat
Applying a top coat, enabling you to achieve a smooth finish
In addition to this, you will also learn how to do Ashlar Jointing and understand when to use Expansion Joints. You will learn all about the different types of rendering finishes and have a detailed understanding of all tools, materials and techniques required to complete a rendering project, including details on all of the correct mixes.
This 3 week training programme is entirely hands on and over the 3 weeks, you will cover all aspects you need to have a basic understanding of plastering, dry lining and rendering. You will be involved throughout, working under supervision of qualified instructors.
This course can be covered over a period to suit you, and you can train for 3 consecutive weeks, divide your weeks up or even incorporate some weekend training (for the plastering aspect).
This is a hands-on, practical course and you will be involved at every stage and will be participating throughout. It is therefore recommended you bring suitable clothing and for your own safety, steel capped footwear is essential.
Plastering Courses at Able Skills
Location
All of our courses take place at our dedicated training centre in Dartford, Kent. The centre is easily accessible by road, being just 10 minutes from junction 1a on the M25. We are only a short walk from Dartford train station which is served by frequent trains taking 35 minutes from central London. For anyone travelling from further away, we have our own accommodation available at only £25 per night.
