Learn how to test portable electrical appliances with a qualification in Electrical Equipment Maintenance and Testing. Aimed at practicing electricians, this qualification will help and progress individuals within the Electrotechnical industry.
A qualification in Electrical Equipment Maintenance and Testing is for practising electricians who want to progress in their career or move on to further study.
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 places a legal accountability on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations and to take reasonable and practical steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of electrical equipment - this requires a regular program of maintenance, inspection and testing. Every item of electrical equipment in a commercial environment is required to be tested to ensure that it is safe to use and has been marked safe. A competent person must inspect the installation regularly in any public building or a place that people work. The Portable Appliance Testing scheme is designed to ensure that those responsible for the maintenance and/or practical inspection and testing of electrical equipment are familiar with the use of the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.
C&G 2377-77 - City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment is aimed at those undertaking practical inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
The Portable Appliance Course will cover electrical safety regulations, role and responsibilities, insulation and earthing, classification of appliances, preliminary inspection, test precautions, appliance testing using a portable tester, essential and optional tests, labelling tests, reporting and recording results and implementing a test programme. Portable Appliance Testing courses are predominantly theory based as there is an on-line exam to complete however there is also a practical assessment associated with the C&G 2377-77 award so practical training with the aid of PAT testing equipment will be undertaken.
This course will be delivered over 2 days. The on-line exam is open-book so it is essential that you have a copy of IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. We also recommend this as pre-course reading material.
